How do I properly introduce a Buckfast queen to a brood split (without flying bees)?
In the morning, take approximately three capped brood frames with emerging bees attached. Place a frame of food on both sides and a frame of water. Add additional young bees and let the split sit with an open entrance for 3–4 hours. Afterward, introduce the queen in a cage, keeping her fully enclosed for the first 24 hours. Then replace the closure with candy. Check for queen acceptance after at least one week. Once the queen starts laying eggs, you can begin feeding.
How do I introduce a Buckfast queen into an artificial swarm?
Sweep about 1.5 kg of bees from one or several colonies into a swarm box, preferably young bees or bees from the honey super. After 2–3 hours, transfer the artificial swarm into a hive with drawn combs or foundation sheets. Introduce the queen simultaneously, initially under a secure closure. Store the artificial swarm cool and dark for at least 24 hours. After this confinement, move the swarm to its new location early in the morning or at dusk. Replace the closure with candy and start liquid feeding on the third day.
